Hospital Discharge Data

The information about NC Medicare Hospitalizations comes from the NC Health Service Encounter Files, supplied by CMS to MRNC. The people represented in this database are NC Medicare beneficiaries enrolled in Medicare Part A, who received service at a North Carolina hospital. The denominators used to calculate discharge rates are based on Medicare Part A enrollment. The data are updated quarterly. The conditions available for query were selected because of their contribution to the health care burden in the Medicare population. Query results are based on the primary diagnosis associated with the hospital stay, that is the reason for the hospitalization. Outcome measures reported include number of discharges, discharge rates, mean nights of stay, inpatient mortality rates, 30-day readmission rates, and 30-day mortality rates. For a complete listing of the ICD-9-CM codes, and definitions and formulas used for the outcomes, please visit our Technical Notes page.
